Dean K. Brooks, MD, 1916-2013

Dean K. Brooks, MD, is a central figure in the history of Oregon’s public mental health systems. Before it was common practice, Dr. Brooks brought a humanitarian focus to the institutional care of people with mental illness. From 1947 as a new psychiatrist through 1982 he initiated innovative practices at OSH. As Superintendent
from 1955 to 1982 he was a national leader of mental health reform, proving that it is possible even in the
face of severe overcrowding and aging facilities. He created a steady path, reminding himself at every turn “…always remember, you are here to serve the Patient.”
