New Conversations: The Pain We See

Join us as we kick off a new speaker series celebrating the 50th anniversary of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, an Oregon-made film that brought critical attention to mental health issues. Shot at the Oregon State Hospital, the film’s legacy continues to spark conversation about mental health, and we are reflecting on its impact all year.

The first in our New Conversations series, we’ll explore some themes from the film—mental health, stigma, and societal progress—with Dr. Ron Turker and Dr. Michael Harris. They’ll discuss how these issues continue to shape our understanding and how we can move forward in supporting mental health in our communities.

Michael Harris, PhD, is a child and adolescent psychologist whose focus is on kids with chronic health conditions including: diabetes, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, and chronic pain. He founded the OHSU/ Doernbecher Children’s hospital NICH program. Novel Interventions in Children’s Healthcare, an innovative, wraparound service to help families of kids with complex health conditions.

Ron Turker, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, started med school and standup comedy in the same year. Labeled a “multitasker” in the ‘80s, his more modern diagnosis would be ADDD, “Attention Deficit Doctor Disorder.” Thirty years of surgical practice taught him, the pain we feel is always real, and often can’t be seen on an MRI. And… he has had the distinct privilege of working with Dr. Michael Harris.
